Root Canals

What’s a Root Canal?

Root canals are essential in helping to save the structural integrity of a tooth that’s been damaged or decayed. The procedure involves removing the small pulp from the tooth. This pulp contains all of the nerves and blood supply essential for the tooth to be vital. If this pulp becomes infected by decay or has been exposed, it’ll cause severe pain and sensitivity until it is removed.

Why would a Root Canal be needed?

The most common cause for needing a root canal is decay. If you were told in the past that you needed a filling and never had it placed, the decay will eventually get to the point of reaching the inner pulp. Likewise, a tooth that has fractured or cracked may expose the pulp inside, causing issues with pain and sensitivity.

Who’s a candidate for Root Canals?

If you need a root canal, it’s important to have it done as soon as possible. The reason for this is simply due to the fact that the pain you’re experiencing can and will get worse. The pulp should be removed to help prevent this pain and reduce any chance of infection. We can determine if a root canal is needed with a simple x-ray and examination.

Happens During The Root Canal Procedure

What happens during the Root Canal procedure?

The area to be worked on is numbed with local anesthetic. We then carefully remove any decay from the tooth. The pulp is removed using special tools and the canals of the tooth’s roots are scraped clean of any residual matter. The canals of the tooth are then filled and we work to fill the small hole that was created to reach the inner tooth. The procedure normally takes about an hour and is beneficial in that it prevents the need for a full extraction. While root canals have had quite a stigma in the past, the procedure is easy and quick when done in our office.
