Dental X-Rays

What’s a Dental X-Ray?

Dental x-rays are important diagnostic tools that we use to see underneath the surface of your teeth. This gives us the chance to spot cavities, problems with restorations, bone loss and even infections without performing invasive procedures. X-rays are taken at most dental appointments, and they use a safe amount of radiation. Most patients will need regular x-rays taken in our office.

Why are Dental X-Rays so important?

The reason x-rays are so important is because certain problems cannot be seen or detected with a regular examination. The x-ray allows us to see just below the surface to identify a variety of dental conditions. Rather than perform procedures that are not needed, these x-rays are a critical part of helping to maintain optimal oral health. They are crucial for patients of all ages and should be taken at regular intervals.

When should Dental X-Rays be taken?

We often take x-rays at most appointments, whether you’re coming in for an emergency or for a cleaning. Because of how beneficial these images are, you can feel confident in what they can do for your health. Some scenarios where x-rays will be needed include:

We will place a lead apron over your whole body. This helps to refract any bouncing radiation once the x-ray is taken. A small device is then placed into the mouth and the machine itself is aimed directly at this device. The x-ray is then taken and an image will be developed shortly after. The doctor will use these x-rays to help in treating you and providing optimal care. X-rays are safe and use such a minuscule amount of radiation that they are essential for patients of all ages and needs.
