Dentures & Partials

What are Complete and Partial Dentures

If you are missing a great deal of your natural teeth, a prosthesis can help to fill in what you’re lacking. Partial dentures only contain a few teeth on a small, wearable appliance. The appliance is worn similarly to an orthodontic retainer and can be removed when cleaning is needed. A complete denture is meant to be worn over an entire arch of missing dentition. Both prosthetic appliances help to fill in smiles while retaining oral function.

Why are Complete and Partial Dentures needed?

Whether you’re missing a handful of teeth or an entire arch of teeth, you’ll find that lacking enough dentition has an impact on how you feel and how well you’re able to eat. Your face may take on a sunken-in appearance, which can age you significantly. Either denture is crucial in helping to fill in areas of tooth that are missing. You’ll feel more confident in your smile and be able to eat and chew normally without any problems.

Who’s a candidate for Complete and Partial Dentures?

Most patients who need a prosthetic appliance of any kind can and should have one made. These appliances can easily last for about seven years and may need to be replaced as they show signs of any wear. We will conduct an examination to decipher if you need a full or partial denture. In some cases, we may suggest extractions so that a full denture can be placed.

What can you expect during the procedure for Complete and Partial Dentures?

It is not uncommon to need extractions prior to a denture being made for you. Once the gums have healed from surgery, we’ll take impressions of the mouth and use these to craft a new prosthesis. The prosthetic is matched to your gum color and the rest of your teeth. You’ll then come in and be fitted for the denture. It’s not horribly uncommon to need two or three adjustments before the fit is perfect. It’s important to remove the denture nightly to clean it.
