Bone Grafts

What are Bone Grafts?

A bone graft is a type of procedure that involves placing additional bone in an area where it may be missing. Oftentimes, a bone graft is necessary before implants are placed, since the additional bone helps to stabilize the implant’s post. Bone grafts may sound complicated, but the procedure is quite simple and is done in our office. The procedure itself is done within a matter of one or two hours, and you can go home the same day.

Why would a Bone Graft be needed?

There are many reasons for why bone loss occurs and why you’d need a bone graft. Patients with severe gum disease or who have already had multiple extractions may be suffering from bone loss. Having a bone grafting done can help to improve the area where bone is currently missing to help with other procedures. The most common reason for needing a bone graft is because you are going to have dental implants placed.

Who is a candidate for a Bone Graft?

The majority of patients who require a bone graft can safely have the procedure done. We will conduct an exam and take special x-rays to determine if a bone graft is the right choice for you. If you need to have this procedure done, it’s important to come into the office for it before going for other treatment. You should be healthy enough to undergo and recover from oral surgery.

What happens during Bone Grafts?

The procedure begins with an anesthetic that is used to numb the area where the grafting will be placed. We offer sedation options to our patients who prefer to be more relaxed or asleep for the surgery. The next step is to create an incision through the gums. We then place the bone material, which is either donor or synthetic, and will then add a growth factor to the area to help the bone to bond with the surrounding area. The gums are sutured and you’ll be given careful instructions to keep the area clean and free of infection while it heals.
